thanks for stopping by!
i'm kate rears, neurodivergent writer, illustrator, & socially awkward chihuahua-coffee-garden lover. im a self-trained artist & well-trained writer, and i love, love, love repetition, lists and collections.. as you would expect from any audhder, i've had many jobs and interests: i've worked for federal, state and local government, nGOs, universities & myselF. I have a bachelor degree in science have learnt french my whole life but remain non fluent, and sometimes like to work as an academic editor.
i care deeply about the world and for the longest time, thought i had to work myself into the ground to prove it. I'm sure you know the feeling! i've advocated for kids in the child safety, mental health and justice systems & worked with people transitioning out of prison (i wrote a phd about this!).i've tried to make research & health (& prison) systems better for people with intellectual disability and autism.
i've burnt out time &time (& time) again fitting my round self into so many different square holes...
one thing that has always stuck for me is art & storytelling. i just never thought these things were quite enough. but, over time, i've come to know art makes the world go round & is a much more authentic and kinder-to-my-nervous-system vocation (for me) that contributes in a very real way to making the world a better place.
one day, i hope to write lots of books and illustrate them. i think trees, rocks, animals and other creatures know the truth, and i believe their version of it, and would like to try to communicate what i've heard from them through art and stories.
i hope you enjoy browsing this site and hope you'll get in touch if you'd like to (see my email and @insta below)! Yours, in art x
PS I keep library hours
